AFFF 3% S

Fomtec AFFF 3% S is an aqueous film forming foam concentrate (AFFF) consisting of a blend of fluorocarbon-, hydrocarbon surfactants and various solvents and stabilisers. Only C6 Pure fluorosurfactants are used in Fomtec AFFF-formulations. Fomtec AFFF 3% S utilises the unique film forming effect to cut off oxygen supply to the fire and the oleophobic properties of the foam enables a stable foam blanket to suppress reignition of the fire.

Description

Fomtec AFFF 3% S is a high-performance foam concentrate made for demanding industrial fire protection. It uses C6 Pure fluorochemistry, which delivers fast knockdown, strong burnback resistance and reliable performance on both Class A and Class B fires. In addition, the foam holds approvals from UL 162, ULC, FM 5130, GOST and CCCF, making it suitable for international systems and standards.

Moreover, the concentrate performs well in sprinkler systems and in both low- and medium-expansion applications.

Features

  • Short-chain C6 Pure fluorochemistry

  • Approvals: UL 162, ULC, FM 5130, GOST, CCCF

  • Tested and approved for sprinkler use

  • Effective on Class A and Class B fires

  • Works in low and medium expansion systems

Product Description

You should proportion Fomtec AFFF 3% S at 3% (3 parts concentrate and 97 parts water). The concentrate works with all types of water. You may also store it as premix when using fresh water.

For Class A fires, use an induction ratio between 0.3% and 1%, depending on the application method and discharge device. Thanks to its strong film-forming properties, the foam spreads quickly and reduces the chance of reignition.

Applications

Fomtec AFFF 3% S is ideal for high-risk industrial facilities, including:

  • Petrochemical and chemical plants

  • Tank farms and fuel depots

  • Industrial warehouses

  • Foam-water sprinkler systems

  • Type II and Type III discharge devices

Furthermore, the foam performs exceptionally well on hydrocarbon fires such as gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel and oil. It also works on Class A materials like paper, textiles and wood.

For correct application rates and approved hazards, refer to the FM Approval Guide and UL Listings.

Sprinkler System Performance

Sprinkler applications often create difficult conditions. The system operates at low pressure, produces low expansion and applies the foam with force. As a result, the foam must tolerate direct impact, partial fuel submersion and short periods of water spray.

Fomtec AFFF 3% S handles these challenges well. It maintains its fire performance, burnback resistance and stability even under harsh sprinkler conditions. For approved sprinkler SINs and minimum application rates, check the FM Approval Guide and UL Listings.

Fire Performance & Foaming Characteristics

Fire performance follows the international approval standards listed above. The foaming values depend on the system design, equipment, water quality and ambient temperature. Typical properties using a UNI 86 nozzle according to EN 1568-3 are:

  • Average expansion: 7:1

  • 25% drainage time: approx. 3 minutes

Always confirm that the equipment is approved for AFFF concentrates. FM and UL guides list suitable system components.

Environmental Information

Fomtec AFFF 3% S uses materials chosen for both fire performance and environmental profile. All ingredients are REACH-registered. The product is biodegradable, non-toxic and PFOS/PFOA-free, in line with the US EPA Stewardship Programme and EU Directive 2017/1000.

For spill disposal and handling of premix, follow local regulations. You may also consult Fomtec Technical Advice FTA 40 for further guidance.

Storage & Shelf Life

When stored in original, unopened packaging, the product can achieve a shelf life of more than 10 years in temperate climates. Keep the foam concentrate away from strong temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight. Fomtec Technical Advice FTA 10 provides additional storage recommendations.

Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

All foam concentrates benefit from annual testing by an approved laboratory. Recommended standards include:

  • NFPA 11

  • FM 5130

  • EN 13565-2

  • EN 1568

Storage tanks and containers should also be inspected to ensure stable temperature and proper protection from environmental exposure.
