Ship owners have many reasons to transition their onboard hydraulic machinery to environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) such as a reduction in fines, concern for the environment and impact to organizational reputation should a spill occur. In addition, proposed changes to US regulations will require deck equipment that extends over the water to use EALs.
In specific markets, requirements for low temperature hydraulic oils is growing hand in hand with the expansion of shipping routes into arctic regions, including oil and gas activities and expedition cruises in artic regions.
As a result, Klüber Lubrication has developed the Klüberbio LM 2 range of EAL hydraulic fluids that reduce impacts on the environment, meet demanding OEM specifications and are based on fully saturated synthetic ester oils.
Klüberbio LM 2 fluids are intended for applications in the marine and offshore industries as well as for use in the building and water engineering sectors. They are also preferred in stationary hydraulic equipment operating in ecologically sensitive environments, e.g. in hydroelectric power plants and waterway locks.
The product series complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s requirements for classification as an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) in terms of biodegradability, toxicity and bioaccumulation standards according to Appendix A of the EPA’s Vessel General Permit (VGP). In addition, Klüberbio LM 2 oils meet or even exceed the minimum requirements of HEES oils according to ISO 15380.
